Demand for next-generation weight-loss drugs is moving faster than the regulatory system, with unapproved versions of Eli Lilly’s experimental drug retatrutide already widely marketed online. Products claiming to contain retatrutide are being promoted and sold by numerous online sellers even though the drug has not yet been approved by the FDA. Lilly has pursued legal action against unauthorized sellers while the FDA has issued warning letters to companies marketing products for human use, raising broader questions about enforcement as demand for GLP-1s and other peptides continues to grow.
In an article in Axios, Edgar Asebey weighed in on the legal response to the growing market for unapproved versions of retatrutide. Commenting on Lilly’s broad strategy for pursuing sellers, Asebey said, “This seems to be like ‘Let’s throw the book at everybody.’” The legal activity highlights the growing enforcement and regulatory challenges surrounding unapproved weight-loss drugs as consumer demand continues to accelerate.
