Guillermo Beades Featured in Managed Healthcare Executive, “For Fraudsters, COVID-19 Is the Sound of Opportunity Knocking”
Fraud is a persistent issue in the history of U.S. healthcare. However, with the government’s decreased oversight and the implementation of telehealth billing codes and diagnostic abilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, new opportunities for fraudulent activity have arisen. Fraud can be committed in various ways, but common scams involve repeatedly billing for the same service, billing for services or supplies that were never provided, and upcoding, which refers to billing for a service that was more complex than the one performed.
In a new article in Managed Healthcare Executive, “For Fraudsters, COVID-19 Is the Sound of Opportunity Knocking”, Frier Levitt partner Guillermo J. Beades was quoted as saying “Are doctors compliant? My experience is that most are not… Providers may not seek legal advice, taking the vendor’s word that the business is legal. The majority of the time [the providers] don’t know better.”
