AMA Updates CPT Codes for Office Visits
On September 1, 2020, the American Medical Association (“AMA”) updated codes for office and outpatient visits. These recent updates include:
- Elimination of history and physical exam elements for code selection;
- Code selection based on medical decision making or total time;
- Added detail to code descriptions.
These E/M revisions are among 329 total changes in the 2021 CPT code set. Additionally, the AMA has updated codes to address reimbursements for services provided due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since E/M coding is one of the main areas of audits, these changes should help physicians in easing many of the common issues faced when audited by a private payor or a governmental agency.
