Christopher Mayer Featured in Medical Economics: “AI and employment law: Why small practices may stand to benefit”

As artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into healthcare operations, its impact on smaller medical practices may look different from the large-scale workforce changes seen in other industries. AI adoption in healthcare is likely to occur largely behind the scenes, particularly in smaller practices. AI tools are being developed to automate administrative functions and support operational efficiency, potentially helping practices reduce costs while maintaining the hands-on clinical care that remains central to medicine.

According to Christopher Mayer in a recent interview with Medical Economics, smaller physician practices may actually benefit significantly from this shift. Many independent physicians are already early adopters of AI tools for administrative tasks, research, and other operational functions that support running a medical practice. While physicians are not relying on AI to replace their clinical judgment, they are increasingly using it to streamline the “back-office” aspects of their work, helping small practices operate more efficiently while still maintaining direct control over patient care and business decisions.
