Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used by companies to analyze workforce data and guide employment decisions, including identifying redundancies and potential layoffs. As organizations across industries explore how generative AI can streamline operations and automate certain tasks, the technology is beginning to influence how employers evaluate staffing needs and workforce structure. While AI-driven workforce analysis remains largely behind the scenes, its growing role is raising new legal and compliance considerations for employers navigating workforce restructuring.

In an interview with Medical Economics, Christopher Mayer discussed how AI is affecting the workplace in two key ways. First, some employers are beginning to use generative AI tools to evaluate internal workforce data and identify positions that may be redundant or unnecessary. At the same time, AI itself is driving broader workforce disruption as companies adopt technology that can perform tasks previously handled by employees. Mayer notes that while many industries may experience significant workforce changes, healthcare may remain relatively insulated because it is largely patient-facing and continues to rely heavily on human interaction.
